Now I was watching The American the other day, I must admit I thought the film was alright. Certainly liked the way Anton Corbijn shot the film and the tension that runs throughout the slow moving thriller but one thing I really didn't take to, was George Clooney's performance. I'm still not sure this guy is all that good of an actor. He spends the whole film with this ridiculous intense look on his face and he is clearly trying too hard to be this quiet, reserved assassin - didn't work for me George son, stick to the silky crow Danny Ocean roles (although still not as smooth as Frank Sinatra in the original but what can you do?)
So it got me thinking about other films that are ruined by strange castings or - in the case of my first example which follows - terrible accents...
Now I don't want to talk about this film in a negative way because this Brian De Palma gangster classic is bloody awesome but The Untouchables is almost reduced to farce by Sean Connery's god awful accent!! What makes it even worse is he actually won an oscar for this performance and I wonder if Hollywood didn't realise just how atrocious his accent is - aside from that this film is seriously brilliant though, so I can't slag it off anymore - if you haven't seen this film when you watch it you will know exactly what I'm talking about!
Any list of terrible acting would not be complete without this next example. Two words ... Sofia Coppola! Everyone who has seen her woeful showing in Godfather 3 has just felt a shiver down their spine. No doubt the woman has talent - how can't she when her dad is Francis Ford Coppola?! - she is a brilliant writer/director but love, you can't act. Ok she was only a child but that's no excuse, I've seen trees that have given better performances in hurricanes than her. Awful, awful awful.
This next choice is simple *clears throat* anything Keira Knightley has stared (I use that word very very loosely) in ever, ever, evvvveeerrr! - here's a question, does anyone think she can act? I mean when Gary Lineker and Alan Hanson out act you in a film I'd be asking serious questions of my career choice!
So picture the scene, big meeting room. Producers, directors and key grips sitting around discussing remaking the classic Alfie... 'we need someone with the charm and charisma to update Michael Caine's version, someone who has the talent to back it up' ... They give the work experience kid the job of calling their chosen actor and all of a sudden on day one of shooting Jude Law turns up. Jude Law! Are you kidding me? Why not just cast his girlfriend and really drive a nail in the coffin... Oh you did! Oh, well. I guess that's it then...
What a terrible decision, what a crap remake and I'm scared to think what they'd do next...
Remake The Godfather with One Direction?
Can you imagine...
