I love films that surprise you, now I don't mean a twist in the plot exactly - yes we all love those - but films where you watch them not knowing much about them or just cause you are bored, and it ends up striking a chord with you.
There have been many films down the years that have done that to me. Now I've mentioned Donnie Darko a lot - and rightly so for it's sublime - but I brought the DVD as it was like two pounds and I thought it was about a killer dressed in a rabbit suit who turned out to be Drew Barrymore!! Yes that's what I actually thought, just slightly wrong, I know!! So I sat, watched it and had my mind blown. You know the story, I've told you enough times.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was another such story. I didn't know a lot about it but without reading a full review had heard good things, so I added to my LoveFilm wish list. It arrived, I watched and within 10 minutes I was gripped. The quick script really hooked me, not to mention Michelle Monaghan's legs at the party! (if you've seen it you know, if not, watch it I'll wait.... Told you!!) Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr are excellent in the film and I have to say it shot up my list of film favourites and it's one I always, always bring into conversation about favourite films.
The Descent is next on my 'films I love that I watched because I was bored having heard nothing about them' - that's a catchy title...
The Descent is an excellent British horror from Neil Marshall, who's Dog Soldiers I wasn't a massive fan of I must admit. The way he lights and shoots this film is very clever considering for the majority of the film we are stuck in a cave. The first time the girls encounter the monsters down there was the first time the cast had seen them, so those screams are real fear. I love film making like that. Yes it's slightly twisted but being unconventional has it's rewards as it brings a realism to films that sometimes directors fail to find because they are trying too hard.
Another has just popped into my mind and it should be right up there with Donnie Darko because film fans... I love this film. Brick!! My word WHAT A FILM!!
Brilliantly written, brilliantly shot - that scene where Joseph Gordon Levitt is running at the school is awesome! - great cast, loved every single minute. It was just like nothing I was expecting at all and I wish I could write narrative in that Film Noir style. Please please watch this if you haven't.
There is a place for all kinda of movies. Blockbusters, horror, romance (just), comedy, everything. I love watching a film not knowing what to expect, that excitement that 'this might be the best film I've ever seen' I love that feeling. Then after you have seen a really great movie you are left feeling like 'what was my life like before I saw that film?'
Bit like after watching The Number 23...
Oh wait, no that was 'what was my life like before this shite ruined my day'
Awful film.
Awful.
Number 23 worst film ever
